A lovely privilege of setting a movie in a fictional monastery is the opportunity to film in actual monasteries. This weekend saw us setting up shop at two: Saint Vincent Archabby and Saint Emma Monastery.1 Getting to film in any holy space like this is remarkable in itself, but especially in the case of Saint Vincent, having its history as our backdrop is incredibly humbling. Home to some 70-80 Benedictine monks, Saint Vincent Archabbey is the oldest Benedictine monastery in the United States and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Saturday was our second of three production days on site and once again, began in the Basilica’s confessional.
